French Prime Minister Francois Fillon has abandoned his carbon fuel tax plans to 'avoid harming the competitiveness of French companies'.
In polls, two-thirds of French voters said they were opposed to the new levy, fearing they would struggle to pay higher bills. The government was forced to amend its proposals after they were rejected by the high court in December. Before the recent elections where his party suffered devastating losses, Nicholas Sarkozy vowed to “save the human race” from climate change through his carbon tax.
The court ruled then that too many exemptions created inequalities and unfairly placed the burden of cuts on a minority of consumers.
