Outrage of the Day

IT'S BEEN CALLED "The most massive scientific fraud ever."
A Massachusetts anesthesiologist who published 21 papers in anesthesiology journals between 1996 and 2008 made up some or all of the data for thirteen years.

From FoxNews: Pfizer gave Dr. Scott S. Reuben five research grants between 2002 and 2007. Reuben, 51, a prominent researcher, also was a member of the company's speakers bureau, giving talks about Pfizer drugs to colleagues. He pleaded guilty to one count of medical fraud. He will repay more than $360,000 of research grants and forfeit assets worth at least $50,000.

Respectful Insolence calls it a massive betrayal of trust and puts the outrage into perspective. Reuben wasn't just any reasearcher.
Dr. Reuben was considered a pioneer in his field, and his work is not only widely cited, but serves as the basis for an amount of anesthesia practice that few academic anesthesiologists can lay claim to."
The blog found a PubMed search shows that Dr. Reuben has over 70 peer-reviewed papers.

Reuben went beyond faking data. He advocated for the use of such drugs, many of which carried serious risks, including Vioxx and Bextra that were eventually removed from the market because of concerns about potential heart risks. He suggested after-surgery benefits from painkillers including Vioxx and Celebrex.. The scam was uncovered when the Massachusetts hospital conducted an audit.

See "New Episodes Of Scientists Behaving Badly" in the Wall St. Journal for other frauds.
