Roman Polanski, child rapist, hero in France

For those following the Roman Polanski story, the French and Swiss have strongly protested the extradition of the director to the U.S. to face decades-old sex charges.

In 1977, Polanski, then age 43, pled guilty to unlawful sex with a minor, a 13-year-old girl at Jack Nicholson's house. Writer Kate Harding reminds people of what a great bargain his plea deal was.
Before we discuss how awesome his movies are or what the now-deceased judge did wrong at his trial, let's take a moment to recall that according to the victim's grand jury testimony, Roman Polanski instructed her to get into a jacuzzi naked, refused to take her home when she begged to go, began kissing her even though she said no and asked him to stop; performed cunnilingus on her as she said no and asked him to stop; put his penis in her vagina as she said no and asked him to stop; asked if he could penetrate her anally, to which she replied, "No," then went ahead and did it anyway, until he had an orgasm.
Polanski was promised no jail time but fled the country before sentencing, fearing the judge would not accept the outrageous agreement.
You can find the grand jury testimony at the Smoking Gun.
FOR SHEER HYPOCRISY, there is Washington Post's Anne Applebaum's defense of Polanski. But, as blogger Patterico points out, Applebaum's husband is the Polish foreign minister who is lobbying for the case to be dismissed. A fact that she failed to disclose. PATTERICO'S blog entry.

Applebaum denies knowing her husband was helping Polanski at the time she wrote the article, but one of Patterico's readers discovered that her husband's name appeared in an article she linked to in her article.
Patterico is one of the best of the legal blogs. He works for the Los Angeles District Attorney. He is not involved with the case and does not write in any official capacity. His forte is legal issues.
