one important consideration about the demolition of the arch: that it was entirely pointless. It was the ultimate act of vandalism. And whatever the arch itself came to symbolise, its destruction came to symbolise two other far less attractive things: the philistine ruthlessness of government, and the bulldozing mentality of the march of modernism.
