CORRUPTION - NEW JERSEY

Sept 1 -
Former state senator Joseph Coniglio was sentenced today in federal court here to 2 1/2 years in prison for funneling state money to a hospital in exchange for a high-paying consulting job. He will also pay $15,000 in fines.
The Hackensack University Medical Center paid him more than $100,000 to help secure at least $1 million in state grants.

Coniglio (below) was a member of the Budget Committee.

(He'll be joining Former Sen. Wayne Bryant, once one of New Jersey's most powerful politicians, who will begin serving a four-year sentence for using his clout as budget chairman to get a $35,000-a-year low-work job at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey that boosted his taxpayer-funded pension. In exchange, he funneled the school more than $10.5 million in state funding.)

Best line: "Coniglio's three-week trial cast a spotlight on New Jersey's byzantine state budget process that critics say has historically allowed lawmakers to award millions in state grants to local organizations with little public oversight."

Which makes it different from earmarks in Congress how??
