CORRUPTION WATCH
The Chicago Tribune is following corruption. Sorta. Were?
OF CURRENT INTEREST, Dems are standing by the man they've chosen to replace Barak Obama in the U.S. Senate, the current Illinois state Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias.
Sounds like great credentials having a former banker as Illinois state treasurer, unless you consider the bank is on the verge of collapse from bad loans made when Alexi was the senior loan officer. Oh, and then there is the $20 million they loaned to two "reputed mobsters" (Daily Herald) aka "convicted felons" (Associated Press) or "crime figures" (Chicago Tribune). (John Kass describes them as "earthy types" but, then, he has to interview mobsters.) The names are Michael "Jaws" Giorango and Demitri Stavropoulos. The loans were made when Alexi was in charge and at a time both men were set to serve prison sentences.
Prior to that, the bank, Broadway Bank, routinely loaned money to the two men who, in turn, loaned to others. And funded some real estate ventures to act as collateral for -- more loans. (That we as U.S. taxpayers will probably eat.)
If you never heard about the bank, the state Treasurer or the rest of that remember, "What happens in Chicago, stays in Chicago." (Our Chokehold Media credo.)
