UNEMPLOYMENT RISES IN 30 STATES IN JANUARY
Five states reported record-high (for them) joblessness in January:
12.5% - California
12.6% - South Carolina
11.9% - Florida
11.1% - North Carolina
10.4% - Georgia
Highest rates
14.3% - Michigan's rate is still the nation's highest
14% - Nevada
12.7% - Rhode Island
South Carolina and California round out the top five.
Spin headline from McClatchy: "31 states added jobs in January, though jobless rates grew"
The tiny print, "Only nine states saw jobless rates fall, and 11 saw no change."
CNN Money was positively cheery in this headline. State unemployment picture brightens Except, "The report said all 50 states had an unemployment rate in January that was higher than a year earlier."
This interactive graph condenses a good deal of information. None of it as good as the media pretends.
