The campaign has been closely watched around the nation. Gay-rights advocates, still reeling from last year’s passage of a ballot measure banning same-sex marriage in California, say that losing in Maine would further a perception that only judges and politicians embrace same-sex marriage; Iowa, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont and New Hampshire all permit same-sex marriage, but through either legislation or court decisions. And voters in about 30 states have rejected same-sex marriage in constitutional amendments placed on the their ballots.Today with the results in, voters in Maine repealed gay marriage, becoming the 31st state to reject gay marriage when placed on the ballot.
The Disney-owned ABC calls it a narrow win. The vote was 53% to 47% that Time magazine more honestly characterized as "ultimately not very close."
The Associated Press was more honest than the Disney-owned ABC when they wrote, "Gay marriage has now lost in every state — 31 in all — in which it has been put to a popular vote"
