(DELIBERATELY) BELOW THE MEDIA RADAR
Kansas City, Missouri

Compelling reading in Salon by a former reporter, turned Director of Communications for the mayor of Kansas City.
Kansas City is a Goliath among corrupt cities. From its earliest days as a muddy sin stop on the banks of the Missouri River, through the years when "Boss Tom" Pendergast ran the town with a greedy fist, to the 1990s when a near quorum of its City Council was indicted on criminal charges, K.C. has been at the forefront of graft.

For the last decade, the city has been caught up in a pork fest -- all of it perfectly legal -- the likes of which are unequaled in any American city.
Read the whole thing.

YOU COULD WONDER all day how Joe Miller could work for someone whose wife had toy penises on her coffee table to be used as stocking stuffers for their 17-year-old son. Or how he stayed when the family Christmas letter included a graphic description of her husband's prostrate exam. He remained even when the City Council banned her from City Hall, only quitting "the minute I was under investigation." His bio explains his journalism career. (The Pitch is an restaurant and entertainment guide. ) His article exposes the rest. Flawed is the word that comes to mind. (And I'm not talking about the mayor and his nutso wife.)

The pity is that Kansas City is corrupt beyond belief, something I learned when researching the school system. Punks in politics won't help school children deprived of education for generations in a school district that couldn't improve despite a Liberal-to-the-knucklehead Federal judge ordering them to spend $1.6 billion.
